03/19/2018

World War II Medal of Honor recipients will be honored during the 15th annual World War II Heritage Days weekend, April 21-22, at the CAF Dixie Wing Warbird Museum, Atlanta Regional Airport-Falcon Field, in Peachtree City, Ga.

The Hispanic Medal of Honor Society, based in Phoenix, Ariz., will bring an exhibit that includes five Medals of Honor, several large panels with a history of the medal profiles of the 16 Hispanic Americans who received the medal during WWII, and a U.S. flag flown on the USS Missouri. The exhibit has been displayed at the Pentagon and other Department of Defense installations. The five medals, escorted by an Arizona State Trooper on the flight from Arizona to Peachtree City, will be on display Friday through Sunday and will be available for media day on April 20.

The National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force in Savannah, Ga., also plans to provide a display of Eighth Air Force airmen awarded the Medal of Honor. The mission of the museum, located in Pooler, Ga., is to preserve for all Americans the stories of courage, character and patriotism displayed by the men and women of the Eighth Air Force from World War II to the present. The museum offers various monthly programs honoring the men and women of the Mighty Eighth Air Force.

WWII Heritage Days is the largest World War II-theme event in the state of Georgia, bringing together historic aircraft, vintage military vehicles, antique cars, educational displays and demonstrations.

“The mission of WWII Heritage Days is to celebrate the 1940s, salute the Greatest Generation and inspire all ages to preserve the legacy of America’s veterans,” said Jim Buckley, leader of the all-volunteer Dixie Wing. “Each year we feature vintage aircraft, reenactor battles, music and lifestyles of the 1940s, in honor of the Greatest Generation. This is a great family event for children and adults of all ages.”

Suggested donations for WWII Heritage Days are $10 for adults 17 and older and $5 for children 11-17.  Children 10 and under and World War II veterans are admitted free. Tickets for “Keep ‘em Flying,” the hangar dance on Saturday night, are $55 before April 1st, $65 after that date.  Reserved tables also are available.
